Beliefs And Intraocular Pressure

This post is part of a series of articles intended to help you understand the relationship between your thoughts and your intraocular pressure. When I speak about the relationship between stress and eye pressure, many of us have a hard time making the connection -- because stress is a constant in most of our lives. This exercise will help make the connection between IOP and stress clearer.

First, sit quietly and reflect on the statements below. These are called "Universal Beliefs." (The list is taken from The Work of Byron Katie.) Which of these beliefs do you have?

 • I have to work hard.
 • My body should be healthy.
 • I am a failure.
 • I need more money.
 • Life is not fair.
 • I have to do it right.
 • I did it wrong.
 • There is something wrong with me.
 • Other people can hurt me.
 • People are judging me.
 • I am not fulfilling my purpose.
 • I need to understand.
 • I need to know what to do.
 • I don't know what to do.
 • I know what is best for others.
 • I know what they are thinking.
 • They should agree with me.
 • People should be grateful.
 • I know more than you do.
 • Something terrible is going to happen.
 • S/he rejected me.
 • S/he doesn't trust me.
 • There should not be war in this world.
 • I am not lovable.
 • The world is not a safe place.
 • People should keep their promises.
 • My boss should appreciate me.
 • I don't belong.
 • People should not be angry.
 • I can make a mistake.
 • People should not lie.
 • People should respect me.
 • Life should be fair.
 • I need to make a decision.
 • I can disappoint people.
 • I am worthless.
 • I need a partner to be happy.
 • It is my fault.
 • I missed my chance.
 • I need to be careful in life.
 • People should listen to me.
 • Children should love their parents.
 • I can't do anything right.

These are called universal beliefs because most of us have several of them. The list above is not complete, but it is enough to give you the idea. Which of these beliefs do you have? Do you have similar beliefs that are not on this list, but which cause you to feel stress (or subtle discomfort) when you think about them?

Step one is to become aware of your beliefs and step two is to observe how these beliefs relate to your intraocular pressure. If you are a typical primary open angle glaucoma patient, there is a direct link. You will need a tonometer (and a careful, scientific approach) to see the connection, but it is there and it is very, very powerful.

If you don't have a tonometer, it is no problem. Just proceed to directly go to work on your beliefs. (A good place to start, besides reading FitEyes.com, is to read this book: Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life by Byron Katie and Stephen Mitchell.)

This exercise is about examining your beliefs. Become familiar with them and be able to notice when they are operating in you. Understand the power your beliefs have over you. Become aware of how they control your life. Notice that you may not even have chosen your beliefs -- often they were programmed into you. That programming process is explained in The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom, A Toltec Wisdom Book by Don Miguel Ruiz (Hardcover - Jan 15, 2001). That's another book I highly recommend.

If you begin examining your unexamined beliefs, you will be moving in the direction of gaining better control over your own intraocular pressure.

Sorry Dave

I don't agree with you. An Illness like glaucoma is not the result of doing something wrong (as in smoking causing long cancer) ie can resolve if you do something better. If this is what you believe, you think that you are causing you own illness. You could make a lot of people quite misarable in advertising this!

Hi Veronique - yes, not only do I believe that I can better my own intraocular pressure by changing my state of consciousness, I have proven it to my own satisfaction with a very sophisticated research program involving hundreds of thousands of intraocular pressure data points and the most accurate tonometers in the world.

I would suggest you check out some books on the FitEyes.com reading list. fiteyes.com/.../Recommended_2D00_Reading_2D00_FitEyes_2D00_Book_2D00_Club

Particularly take a look at The Genie in Your Genes to see how beliefs can trump inheritance.

I'm not here to tell people lies to make them feel satisfied with a poor state of health. I hope to empower people with cutting edge (and sometimes) controversial knowledge. Telling people that their beliefs don't affect IOP is a lie in my book.

BTW, the only time we suffer is when we believe a lie. (Source - Byron Katie)

Hi Véronique,

If you like I am willing to work side by side with you, get to know your IOP, see how your mind influences your IOP or even your visual field is influenced by your state of mind.

Let me know is you are ready, after all we not live far apart.

I have said it before and I'll say it again. The notion that "we

are what we eat" is incorrect. We eat what we are. "Real

men don't eat quiche" (isn't that an example of eating what

we are?). "I"m a steak and potatoes person" (likewise).

"I've just gotta have my cigarette"...on and on...

It was recently shown that what we eat can change our

DNA. So, take it one step further. If what we eat is

determined by what we are (think), then what we think can

change our DNA.

More than that, of course, we have Dr. Emoto's incredible

discoveries about water

(geocities.com/.../QC-water.htm)

[this is a discussion I posted here but people

asked me to post on a central site]. Emoto shows that our

thinking can affect water, and, of course I extend that

to the concept of prayer/meditation and it's effects.

So, yes, there is significant evidence that we can cause

our own illnesses. What about glaucoma? Véronique

is locked in on "wrongness." I think that is a mistake in

semantics because it leads to "blame." We are meaning-

making machines (Landmark Education), so we look for

blame all the time. We need to leave that and open the

doors of our minds to improvement, rather than blame...

kind of "future" rather than "past."

Dr. Ritch said there was something wrong with the carrier

in our eyes that kept us from getting appropriate amounts

of sodium acsorbate (a liver product). I've successfully

treated my eyes for 1.5 years now with that stuff. My

vision improved. So, I'm thinking I've improved my eyes.

Ha, ha...maybe my thinking improved my eyes, who

knows? Anyway...

Now comes the hitch. What was it about my liver that kept

my eyes from receiving the appropriate "C?" Well, it had

to be something I "et." That something was, again a part

of my thinking.

OK - I've trampled that loop.

Now I'd like to share something I discovered on the FlaxOil

group that affects my thinking in a positive way. It improves

my thinking, and it certainly improves my Qi (I can feel the

difference every time I use this proceedure). The process

is called Emotional Freedom Therapy (E.F.T. for short).

Don't get into the "meaning" mode yet, slow down. EFT is

an incredibly amazing (you insert more adjectives) process

derived from acu-pressure, EMDR, chakra's, Qi flow, &c.

You learn the process, you do it to yourself.....it is F R E E...

and, you use it to affect your thinking.

Suppose you were molested as a child. I was. Do you know

that affects your eating. Certainly you do. You watch Oprah,

Phil, &c. People E A T, quite frequently, because it is

comforting. OH...yeah... you eat what you think. OK...you

eat S O Y, loads of "sugar" (horridly poisonous fructose

corn syrup), highly hormonal charged beeves and

chickens ....pure, unadulterated P O I S O N.

And you expect to be a paragon of health...uh, huh...

And you (general public) are going to tell me that doesn't

affect your liver, and your "C," and your eye's ability to

protect itself from this newly discovered bacterial infection?

You bet your biffy....

So Phil, Oprah, all those people, dedicate themselves to

the changing of peoples lives for the sake of their health.

Invariably it involves a change of their thinking. You hear

that on their shows..."this is all about 'thinking'"...but they

don't relate that to "you eat what you think" Nor do they

relate that to "you change your own bloomin' DNA, folks!"

Now how would YOU like to have a modality at hand that

allows you to analyze your anger, and totally rid yourself

of it (knowing that anger lealds to cake, chocolate ice cream,

candy bars...You've been there)? (and change your DNA)

This modality also controls pain. Oh that stuff? How is that

possible? Because your THINKING amplifies your PAIN...

sometimes your pain is a result of your THINKING....

OK - I'll shut up shortly. You would like to look into EFT?

Be my guest. You can download the "Manual" for free.

It tells you a lot about how it works, but in the center,

there are a half dozen pages devoted to the process...

how to use it ON YOURSELF...F R E E....it also invites

you to become a practicioner. I have NO interest in

being a practicioner. But, folks, I've used it on myself.

The first time, I did it in bed, 3 AM, when my whole

pelvis was killing me (Prostates are a pain), and the

Qi was phenomenal. I went to sleep....and I slept...

and slept...

Yes, I thot, oh boy...wait untill people hear about me

mumbling a little poem or singing one verse of a song...

Then I remembered: "Ohmmmmmm," and the rhythm

of EMDR.....and my chiro saying, close your eyes,

look to the left, and think of the number 8....

This stuff has been around a LOooooNG...time... finally

someone has collated it, simplified, it and then documented it

for you, Véronique, and me, Gruffy. We can use it to change

our thinking, which will change our DNA, and, quite probably,

our eye pressure, should that be of concern.

Here's the site for EFT:

Emotional Freedom

They also have a very helpful e-zine that comes out several

times a month....I save them all, they are so packed with

information.

I apologize. I hereby recind, for a moment, my threat to

"shut up." I have one more comment. There are people who

will pooh-pooh this because it is all anectdotal. If that is

their response, I will reply with the following:

You have yet to prove to me in any way, via any Turing

Test, that you are nothing more than a robot. I have no

evidence you even have a consciousness. When you

can prove to me you do, we'll have bridged the "anectdotal"

barrier." See ya...
