"Every glaucoma patient should
consume berries every day." ~ Dr.
Greger
I drink this morning and evening. It includes some of the most
important berries for our eyes: blueberry, goji berry and tart cherry.
Use fresh berries when you can, but some of the most important berries
for glaucoma are not available fresh. For example, you cannot buy tart
cherries in any normal grocery store, and research shows the juice
concentrate is the best way to consume tart cherries. It is also nearly
impossible to obtain fresh goji berries.
I consider these food-based supplements to be generally more beneficial
than any isolated nutraceutical we could consume.
I include seabuckthorn juice in my concoction because I've seen studies
that indicate seabuckthorn may help improve eyesight. It is also a
nutrient powerhouse. (On June 2nd, 2011 Dr. Oz touted sea buckthorn for its miraculous
ability to help solve weight related issues. The omega 7 fatty
acids it contains can reduce all the parameters of metabolic
syndrome.)
The juices I typically recommend to others are Acai, Beetroot, GoJi, Seabuckthorn and Tart Cherry. As you see, I take a few additional juices myself.
You can also add any of the other organic
superfood juices from my hand-picked Dynamic Health collection here:

Beetroot Juice Organic 32 fl. oz. by Dynamic Health | WebMD says, "Most lists of
superfoods don't include beetroot juice, but maybe they should." Beets
are a unique source of betaine, a nutrient that helps protects cells,
proteins, and enzymes from environmental stress. It's also known to
help fight inflammation,
protect internal organs, improve vascular risk factors, enhance
performance, and likely help prevent numerous chronic diseases. As
reported by the World's Healthiest Foods: "[Betaine's]… presence in our
diet has been associated with lower levels of several inflammatory
markers, including C reactive protein, interleukin-6, and TNF alpha." Elevated TNF alpha has
been shown to be associated with the optic nerve damage in (an
experimental model of) glaucoma.
And chronic inflammation is
also one of the factors underlying glaucoma. Beets also contain
compounds which support healthy blood flow (important in glaucoma) and
normal blood pressure.

Blueberry Juice Concentrate 16 oz. by Dynamic Health (glass) | Blueberries possess a variety of vitamins, and they are particularly rich in antioxidants which can help reverse the oxidative stress that underlies glaucoma. According to an article published in a 2001 issue of "Alternative Medicine Review," blueberries have shown the potential to slow cataract progression in elderly people. The high anthocyanin content in blueberries may also be able to protect the retina from damage. A 2012 found that anthocyanins protect retinal cells from damage caused by aging and light. Another study, published in a 2012 issue of "Laboratory Investigation," found that an anthocyanin extract also protected retinal cells from damage caused by inflammation. | half a TBSP twice a day. I use less because
it is higher in simple carbs. |

Seabuckthorn Gold Organic 32 fl oz (946 ml) by Dynamic Health | A [glaucoma-diabetes] study focused on the possible associations between various components of metabolic syndrome and the risk of glaucoma. Omega-7 palmitoleic acid powerfully addresses many of the underlying factors involved in metabolic syndrome. Some of the highest natural sources of omega-7 palmitoleic acid are Seabuckthorn berry juice and macadamia nuts. Seabuckthorn juice is very popular with FitEyes members because studies indicate that seabuckthorn may help improve eyesight. It also seems to help dry eyes. This nutritional powerhouse is loaded with carotenoids, vitamins A, C and E. These wonderful berries contain 15 times the amount of vitamin C content, for instance, that oranges have. In addition, sea buckthorn is loaded with anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, and nearly two hundred nutrients. On June 2nd, 2011 Dr. Oz touted sea buckthorn for its miraculous ability to help solve weight related issues. | 1 TBSP twice a day | |
Tart Cherry Juice Concentrate Organic 32 fl oz. (946ml) by Dynamic Health | Tart cherries contain numerous nutrients along with at least 17 antioxidants including anthocyanins ellagic acid and naturally occurring melatonin.Melatonin and its metabolites are potent protectors against oxidative stress in neurons and have been considered candidate substances for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system including glaucoma. Melatonin protects ocular tissue against free radicals. Melatonin has been shown to directly reduce intraocular pressure. Furthermore, melatonin suppresses nitric oxide mediated retinal damage, including apoptosis. Melatonin has been shown to protect against retinal ischemia/reperfusion injury. According to one study, melatonin, by itself, may fulfill all the ideal requirements of a future glaucoma treatment. | 3 TBSP once a day in evening |

Truly Natural Vitamin C 500 grams powder by HealthForce | The eye contains the highest concentrations of vitamin C found in the human body. Vitamin C is an essential water-soluble vitamin and a powerful antioxidant which can help offset the elevated oxidative stress found in glaucoma. Taking vitamin C supplements may significantly lower levels of the inflammatory marker CRP (c-reactive protein), again offsetting the inflammation that underlies glaucoma. | half a TBSP twice a day |
