Influencing ocular blood flow in glaucoma patients: the cardiovascular system and healthy lifestyle choices

Submitted by Agnes on Sat, 08/15/2009 - 7:42pm

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES

Lifestyle and environmental factors that are associated with elevated IOP levels include:

total body inversion

hadstand posture yoga positions

tight neckties

playing high-resistance wind instruments

caffeine consumption

In particular, a population-based study identified a positive cross-sectional association between coffee consumption / higher caffeine intake and elevated IOP in participatns with OAG, although this association was not found in subjects without glaucoma. In addition, psychological stress transiently and significantly incresed IOP on a short-term basis, although its magnitude was less than that of a standardized Valsalva Maneuver. In contrast, the use of sauna baths, a natural therapeutic approcah to stress, has been theorized to affect the induction of heatshock protein.

Lifestyle choices that may lead to decreases in IOP include

aerobic exercise

alcohol consumption

In nonsmoking and healthy volunteers, aerobic exercise increased heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and OPP, decreased IOP and diastolic blood pressure, and caused no change in ocular pulse amplitude....

The role of cigarette smoking as a risk factor for glaucoma reminas controversial. While a detaile meta-analysis conducted to exacmine this association concluded that cirrent smokers are at significantly increased risk for developing POAG, a prospective study of female nurses and male health professionals concluded that neighter current nor past smokers are at a greater risk for POAG than those who had never smoked...

The incluence of dietary fats and body mass index and their relation to glaucoma risk is unclear. While obesity in Japanese patients has been shown to have a positive relationship to IOP, there may exist an inverse relationship between obesity and the development of POAG in patients from Switzerland.
