After reading the full study on the effect of sleeping at a 30 degree incline, I decided to try it out. Normally, my pressure is around 19 in both eyes first thing in the morning. It drops within 15-30 minutes to 13-14 with normal activity (not exercise).
So, my problem is how do I lower my pressure while sleeping ? The study seemed to offer a good solution and it can't hurt to try this once, so I figured I'd give it a shot.
By searching on line, I found Brookstone carried a nice wedge pillow for about $99.00. So, I went down to my local shopping mall and picked one up. It appears to be around 30 degrees, but I did not measure it. Sleeping on it was challenging and I woke up several times and wanted to sleep on my back, but, I kept with it. I'm sure I can get used to it over time. I've been sleeping for years and years in one position, so it may take little getting used to.
I noticed an additional benefit of sleeping at an angle. There was no congestion in my sinuses and my head felt clear. Normally, there is some congestion and it takes a bit of walking about for it to clear totally. I also felt more refreshed when I awoke, although I woke up more times than normal. I would surmise there is better fluid flow throughout my head in this position.
Upon arising, I walked over into the next room and took pressure readings (this is the same method I use normally in the morning, so there is no difference in how the measurements were taken). I was pleasantly surprised to obtain the following readings:
Left eye: 16.7 (2.3 mmHg lower than normal)
Right eye: 14.3 (4.7 mmHg lower than normal)
This is only one night, so I will do more monitoring, but it appears to work.
