Scientists Discover New Role for Vitamin C in the Eye and the Brain

Submitted by dave on Tue, 07/26/2011 - 12:57pm

Optic nerve cells require vitamin C in order to function properly. Henrique von Gersdorff, Ph.D., a senior scientist at OHSU's Vollum Institute and a co-author of a new study showing how essential vitamin C is in retinal nerve cells had this to say:

We found that cells in the retina need to be 'bathed' in relatively high doses of vitamin C, inside and out, to function properly.

Astaxanthin, a dietary carotenoid, protects retinal cells

Attached is an interesting study regarding "Astaxanthin" in the neuro protection of retinal cells (which could have implications for glaucoma). This was forwarded to me by a fiteyes member. A little research shows that there are some micro algae based supplements for obtaining this - In light of modern toxins, I am a little hesitant with consuming the amount of seafood that is probably necessary for getting this naturally in the diet.

Saffron: Golden Secret of Clearer Sight

Submitted by dave on Wed, 05/20/2009 - 7:56pm

The Ayurvedic herb saffron may hold one of the keys to preventing the loss of sight in old age – and may even help to improve vision in people suffering certain blinding eye diseases.

Research by Professor Silvia Bisti of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Vision Science (The Vision Centre) and University of L’Aquila, Italy, has established that saffron has remarkable effects on the genes which regulate the performance of the eye’s key vision cells.

Hi, I am Sneha, originally from India and now residing in the US. I was diagnosed with short-sight when I was 14 years of age. I have been wearing soft contact lenses since then. When I turned 23, I got both my eyes LASIK operated in India from a popular eye hospital. I had no problem with my eyes for almost a year. But later on I faced slight eye irritation, redness and sometimes double vision when I sit in front of the computer or when I go outdoors. I am a software engineer by profession which ineveitably requires me to work with the computer for long hours.

I was told, "Nice photos. I would like to use them in a lecture. Your left disc has some thinning of the rim superiorly. You could get a GDx-VCC and see what it shows."

I did get the GDx-VCC and I posted the  GDx-VCC test results here. I also have Heidelberg Retina Tomograph test results posted and you can find them by using the HRT tag.
