My GDx Nerve Fiber Analysis Results

Submitted by dave on Wed, 01/21/2009 - 9:02pm

Here are my GDx Nerve Fiber Analysis results from my eye exam today. The results are slightly better than my last GDx exam as well as my GDx exam from about two years ago. At this point I doubt we can say anything concrete about the significance of the positive change except that things are certainly not getting worse! Big Smile

For people who actually need it for hypotrichosis, I'm sure this new product is welcome. However, I suspect most users will acquire this drug purely for cosmetic enhancement of normal eyelashes. Read more below or see full article here.

Allergan Inc. will be able to sell its Lumigan glaucoma drug for cosmetic use now that the Food and Drug Administration has approved the product to enhance eyelashes.

Stress Negatively Changes Brain Structure, Serene Impulse Positively Changes It

Submitted by dave on Thu, 12/25/2008 - 11:45pm

Research has shown that stress can physically reshape the brain, causing both extensive and long-lasting damage to the human brain. Brain cells can shrink and the connections between neurons can decrease. In short, stress causes big changes to the human nervous system. In 2008, new knowledge regarding the effects of short-term stress were measured at University of California, Irvine, and breakthrough research on the effects of long-term, chronic stress were conducted at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

Light Exposure Damages Supermarket Vegetables - Do Not Eat Green-tinted Potatoes

Submitted by dave on Thu, 12/25/2008 - 8:49pm

According to nutritionist Paavo Airola, we should not eat potatoes that have any green tint and he mentioned a toxin called solanine (a nerve toxin) as the reason why. Potatoes often develop this green tint after exposure to light in the supermarket, but farming and harvesting practices play a role as well.

Basic Background on the Optic Nerve and its Potential for Regeneration (thanks to Wikipedia)

Submitted by dave on Wed, 12/24/2008 - 6:08pm

According to a Wikipedia article about the optic nerve, the optic nerve is the second of twelve paired cranial nerves but is considered to be part of the central nervous system as it is derived from an outpouching of the diencephalon during embryonic development. Consequently, the fibers are covered with myelin produced by oligodendrocytes rather than the Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system.

Best Tonometers For Home Use Self-Tonometry

Submitted by dave on Wed, 12/17/2008 - 7:38pm

In my experience the best tonometers for home use (a.k.a., self-tonometry) are the Reichert AT555 and the Tiolat iCare. Of these the Reichert is much easier to use.

Had  the proview: it never worked :(

I say that's no surprise! Thanks for reporting your experience.

miller13 also asked some questions about which tonometers are suitable for self-tonometry.

Developing a Tiny Wireless Sensor to Monitor Glaucoma Around the Clock

Submitted by dave on Wed, 12/10/2008 - 9:02am

The original article is found on the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) website. HHMI investigator Simon W. M. John shares our perspective on intraocular pressure monitoring. He recognizes that intraocular pressure can vary quite a lot even in one day and that the value of measuring intraocular pressure only twice a year, as is typically done in practice, is very limited.

Acupuncture beats aspirin for chronic headache

Submitted by dave on Tue, 12/02/2008 - 12:32pm

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Acupuncture works better than drugs like aspirin to reduce the severity and frequency of chronic headaches, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.

A review of studies involving nearly 4,000 patients with migraine, tension headache and other forms of chronic headache showed that that 62 percent of the acupuncture patients reported headache relief compared to 45 percent of people taking medications, the team at Duke University found.
